How To Celebrate Christmas In Malta & Gozo

December 18, 2017

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With loads to see and do in this month, we thought it would be a good idea to prepare a list of events, Maltese Christmas traditions and destinations that stand out most during this period.

Worth noting is the fact that Malta was listed as one of the best places to have a Christmas vacation by CNN.

1. Christmas in Valletta

CNN described it perfectly: “lively Christmas spirit, with carolers singing outside the Baroque St. John’s Co-Cathedral during Advent, and a dizzying display of Christmas lights on Republic Street.”

Valletta is looking spectacular this Christmas, so if you’re lucky enough to be visiting this Christmas head on down to the Malta 5D show and get some Christmas shopping done and finish of the day with a lovely stroll around the city.

2. See A Presepju

Visiting presepju, or nativity scenes, is an integral part of Christmas in Malta. Every year, residents proudly open their shutters, and sometimes even their garage doors, to display their holy crib confections to the public.

One of the most majestic is Bethlehem f’ Għajnsielem, an animated nativity village spread on 20,000sqm of land. It offers naturalistic reproduction of the environ of Bethlehem and the timeless story of Nativity every December at ‘Ta Passi’ fields in Għajnsielem.

3. Christmas In Gozo

Christmas is a joyful time and Gozo steps up to celebrate. The town of Victoria and main village squares light up with decorations and there is a hustle and bustle around the island that heralds the festive event. Look out for beautiful choir singing and traditional cribs that reveal true craftsmanship. The traditional processions with the bambin Gesu’ are held in every village with the participation of children.  Not to forget visiting Betlehem f’Għajnsielem.

Check out the Christmas in Gozo brochure and embrace the Christmas spirit!

4. NYE In Valletta

Following the success of the last few years, Malta now boasts a well-established New Year’s Eve national celebration just like every other country. The event aims to bring the magic and festive atmosphere throughout most of our capital city in this magical night. This year will be a special one for Malta as it welcomes Valletta 2018 – The European Capital of Culture

The Celebrations are being organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation, in collaboration with G7 Events, the Valletta Local Council, the Ministry for Tourism and the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government.

St. Georges Square once again will host the main stage and will see the very best of Malta’s top local artists and bands. Furthermore, this year the event will host some innovative international attractions.

The line-up for the night includes special international guests EMBER TRIO, a new age string trio who combine a unique blend of classical and contemporary production elements which have elevated them to become Europes most successful classical crossover string trio. The line up will also include Brass House Unit who will also feature Gianluca Bezzina, Ozzy Lino and Gloriana as well as Kim & the band.

Then it’s time for the energetic countdown by G7 Events’ hosts and 3D architectural countdown to welcome the New Year. Finally, is up to DJ Mykill and trumpet Live to close off the night.

5. Watch A Panto

What’s Christmas without a pantomine? With two major shows to choose from one at MFCC and the other at the gorgeous Manoel Theatre.
